Children with disabilities face very special challenges. Because there are many kinds of disabilities — and because some children have combinations of disabilities or different levels of disability — it is difficult to make generalizations about the needs of children with disabilities. However, all children are entitled to an education that offers them chances for success, and Florida is committed to giving exceptional children those chances.

Your involvement as a parent, guardian or concerned adult can help ensure that a child receives an education that meets his or her specific needs. Below, you will find tips to help you help your child with disabilities succeed.

  • Keep your own records of the child's progress, challenges, and successes. Keep notes from educators, counselors, doctors or other professionals you may consult.
  • Actively participate in the development of the child's Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Review his or her school progress and provide positive feedback to teachers about the progress you see.
  • Join parent groups that advocate for special education services.
  • Ask teachers, counselors and administrators about your child's education and the special services he or she receives.
  • Help others recognize your child's strengths and ask for assistance in dealing with your child's weaknesses.
